Earl Woods, president of the Tiger WoodsFoundation, announced that TWF is working with Panasonic in an attempt to reinforce learning by bringing audio and video equipment to inner-city schools through a donation of equipment to the Thomas A. Edison Middle School in Los Angeles, California. This is another step by the Foundation to pursue its Junior Golf Clinic and Exhibition Leave Behind Program, which has already committed $69,000 to Los Angeles/Long Beach area youth programs from the proceeds raised by the Coca-Cola/Tiger Woods Foundation Junior Golf Clinic & Exhibition held in Long Beach in April 2001.

“Education is the cornerstone to empowering today’s youth, so the Tiger Woods Foundation is pleased to join forces with Panasonic and donate this equipment to the Thomas A. Edison Middle School,” stated Woods. “It is our hope that this equipment and the development of the Kid Witness News program will give better opportunities to the students as they pursue their education.”

The Thomas A. Edison Middle School, L.A. Unified School District’s largest middle school and located in the heart of South Central Los Angeles, is the first school to benefit from the relationship. Its grounds have become a hub for weekend and after school activities, serving as a safe haven that protects youths from the crime and gang activities in the surrounding areas. Unfortunately, attending students have suffered from inadequate learning resources and frequent teacher turnover, leaving them at a disadvantage to other youths their age.

With over 200 public schools participating, Panasonic is proud that Thomas A. Edison becomes the Foundation’s first school to participate in their Kid Witness News program, a hands-on video education program created to encourage students to develop valuable cognitive, communication and organizational skills through the use of video. Through interactive production and direction of an array of videos, students are exposed to current events and school curriculum in a creative light.

“We are very excited to partner with the Tiger Woods Foundation to support inner-city schools by providing Panasonic technology,” said Thomas Taguchi, President, Panasonic Company West. “Panasonic’s outreach program is focused on education and we have a longstanding corporate philosophy of giving back to places where we have the privilege of conducting business. I am looking forward to working with the Thomas A. Edison Middle School Kid Witness News students.”“We are pleased that our students and staff will have access to technology to support participation in activities and experiences that will encourage academic achievement. This may offer the opportunity for students to follow their dream,” stated Faye Banton, Principal of Thomas A. Edison Middle School.
